πŸ“˜ Zambian Highway Code

Core principles

Obey road rules

Follow signs, road markings, traffic signals and lawful instructions from authorised traffic officers.

Keep left

Zambian traffic operates on the left. Keep to the appropriate lane and overtake only when safe and permitted.

Control your speed

Choose a safe speed for the road, traffic, visibility, weather and vehicle conditionβ€”not merely the maximum allowed.

Protect vulnerable road users

Take extra care around pedestrians, children, cyclists, motorcyclists, elderly people and persons with disabilities.

Never drive impaired

Do not drive when affected by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or any condition that reduces safe control of the vehicle.

Use restraints

Seat belts and appropriate child restraints should be used correctly. Never carry more passengers than the vehicle is designed or licensed to carry.

πŸ›‘οΈ Road Safety Tips

Every trip

Plan before movingSet your route, mirrors and controls before the vehicle is in motion.
Buckle upDriver and passengers should use the appropriate seat belt or restraint.
Phone awayDo not text, type, browse or handle a phone while driving. Pull over safely if you need to use it.
Keep distanceLeave enough space to stop safely. Increase the gap in rain, darkness, dust or heavy traffic.
Scan aheadLook well ahead and check mirrors regularly so hazards are identified early.
Slow for conditionsReduce speed for pedestrians, junctions, bends, potholes, animals, road works, rain and poor visibility.
Be patientAvoid aggressive driving, dangerous overtaking, racing and road rage.
Make yourself visibleUse lights correctly and take extra care with pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles at night.

🚘 Defensive Driving

Anticipate risk

See the hazard early

Look through and beyond the vehicle ahead. Identify pedestrians, merging traffic, parked vehicles and obstacles before they become immediate threats.

Expect mistakes

Do not assume another road user has seen you or will obey a rule. Keep an escape option where possible.

Manage following distance

Maintain enough space to brake without relying on the driver ahead to react perfectly.

Overtake only when safe

Check visibility, road markings, oncoming traffic, junctions and your ability to return safely to your lane.

πŸ”§ Vehicle Safety Check

Before departure

Tyres

Check condition, inflation and visible damage.

Lights

Check headlights, brake lights, indicators and hazard lights.

Brakes

Do not operate an unsafe vehicle with suspected brake problems.

Visibility

Clean windows, mirrors and windscreen; ensure wipers work.

Fluids

Check essential fluids according to the vehicle manufacturer's guidance.

Equipment

Carry required safety equipment and ensure it is accessible.

πŸ‘₯ Passenger Safety

For every RideSwift trip

Verify your ride

Check the vehicle and driver details shown in the app before entering the vehicle.

Use the seat belt

Fasten your seat belt and encourage other passengers to do the same.

Safe pickup

Choose a safe, visible pickup point and avoid stepping into moving traffic.

Children

Children require special care and appropriate restraints where required. Never allow a child to travel unsafely.

πŸš‘ Emergency & Crash Response

Protect life first

If a crash or serious road emergency occurs:

  1. Stop safely and avoid creating another hazard.
  2. Call for appropriate emergency assistance and give your location as clearly as possible.
  3. Check for danger before approaching injured people.
  4. Do not move seriously injured people unless there is an immediate danger requiring evacuation.
  5. Cooperate with emergency responders and authorised authorities.
  6. For a RideSwift incident, use the app's support/reporting channels as soon as it is safe to do so.
